Histoire
Blotti au pied du col du Saint-Gothard, Airolo a toujours été la porte d'entrée de la Léventine et un carrefour entre le nord et le sud des Alpes. Détruit par un grand incendie en 1877, le bourg fut reconstruit et devint peu après le siège du portail nord du tunnel ferroviaire du Gothard. Aujourd'hui station de ski et point de départ vers le col, il garde encore l'empreinte de son histoire de village de transit alpin.
