History
Stabio, on the Italian border in the Mendrisiotto, holds important traces of the past: in 1837 a 7th-century Longobard necropolis was discovered near San Pietro, while a Roman altar dedicated to Mercury attests to even earlier settlement. The town is also known today for its shoe and fashion industry tradition. Farmed fields and historic hamlets sit alongside an established industrial character.
