Riva San Vitale

History

Riva San Vitale, on the shore of Lake Lugano, holds the Baptistery of San Giovanni, an octagonal 5th-century building among the oldest Christian structures in Switzerland. The town stretches along the lake at the foot of Monte San Giorgio, a UNESCO World Heritage mountain famed for its fossils. Medieval lanes and old churches tell a history rooted in late Roman times.
