History

Pollegio stands at the southern portal of the Gotthard Base Tunnel, the longest railway tunnel in the world, opened in 2016 after hosting one of the main AlpTransit construction sites for years. The village sits in lower Leventina on the Ticino river plain, amid vineyards and woods. Today it houses rail facilities linked to running the great tunnel.
