History
Formed by the merger of several villages around the Monte Ceneri pass, which separates the Sopraceneri from the Sottoceneri, the municipality sits on a historically and strategically important divide of the canton. Military installations and the transmission tower that for decades broadcast national radio across Ticino stand on the pass. The surrounding woods and pastures still hold the rural cores of Bironico, Rivera and the other villages merged into the new municipality.
