Giornico

History

Giornico is one of the most important historic villages of the Leventina, famous for its two Romanesque churches, San Nicolao and Santa Maria di Castello, among the oldest and best preserved in Ticino. In 1478 its surrounding fields were the site of the famous battle in which a few hundred Confederates defeated a far larger Milanese ducal army. The old stone bridges over the Ticino river complete a landscape that has kept its medieval character intact.
