History
Cugnasco-Gerra spreads across the Magadino plain, on land once marshy and malaria-ridden at the mouth of the Ticino river. Formed from the merger of Cugnasco and Gerra Piano, it keeps an agricultural character of fields and vineyards, while the hills behind hold its oldest settlements. Draining of the plain, completed over the course of the 20th century, transformed the landscape profoundly.
