History
For centuries Cevio was the chief town of the Maggia valley and seat of the bailiff who governed it on behalf of the Confederate cantons. The Palazzo Pretorio, its façade painted with the coats of arms of the successive bailiffs, still bears witness to that historic role. The stone village core, with its archways and stairways, reflects the wealth brought home by traders and returning emigrant merchants.
Villages
