History
Centovalli, the "hundred valleys," takes its name from the many small side valleys cutting through its steep slopes between Locarno and the Italian border. Since 1923 the Centovalli-Vigezzina railway has crossed the region on a scenic route of viaducts and tunnels, linking Locarno to Domodossola. Stone hamlets clinging to the slopes and terraced chestnut groves recall a mountain life once shaped by emigration.
