History
Enclosed by high alpine peaks, the Val Bedretto is the most remote valley in the Leventina and the birthplace of the Ticino river, which rises here near the Novena (Nufenen) Pass. The sparsely populated municipality of Bedretto remained tied for centuries to alpine pastoralism and to travelers crossing toward the alpine passes. Today the valley draws hikers and hosts an underground research laboratory carved into the mountain.
