History
In the heart of the Mendrisiotto, Balerna was for centuries a land of vineyards and trade along the road linking Como to Chiasso. In the 19th century it became an important center of the textile and silk industry, which long shaped the local economy. Today its historic core sits alongside the nearby commercial area, still bearing traces of its winemaking tradition.
